Detectives are searching for the suspects involved in the shooting death of 22-year-old Gerardo Macias that occurred on Saturday, March 16, 2019, in Compton.

That evening, at approximately 10:30 P.M., as Gerardo packed up his car at his Compton home, he heard the loud impact of a nearby traffic collision. Gerardo believed someone was gravely injured and asked his brother, Miguel, for a ride to the scene of the collision. Miguel agreed, and drove Gerardo and six other family members to the scene of the accident, which they located near Atlantic Boulevard and Alondra Boulevard, Compton. They discovered the drivers of both vehicles were trapped in their cars and in dire need of medical aid. The impact was so great, the engine of one of the vehicles dismounted from the front end. Gerardo remained at the accident scene and tended to the injured parties until paramedics arrived.

Once emergency services arrived on scene, Gerardo and his family members, whose ages ranged from 21 months to 28 years old, left the location in their sports utility vehicle. As they drove home, they made a U-turn on Alondra Boulevard, in order to get gas at a nearby fuel station. The small turning radius of the U-turn forced their large vehicle into the driveway of an abandoned strip mall at Alondra Boulevard and White Avenue.

Miguel drove slowly through the parking lot and saw three unfamiliar vehicles approach them. As they crossed paths, the three suspect vehicles abruptly stopped, and without cause, the occupants inside fired several rounds at the Macias family vehicle.
Miguel, the driver, sustained a through and through gunshot wound to the left wrist.

Gerardo, seated in the front passenger seat, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The brothers’ 22-month-old niece sustained facial injuries from shattered glass and shrapnel. It is not yet determined if the injuries she suffered caused permanent damage to her eyesight.
Two of the suspect vehicles are described as dark-colored, four-door sedans. The third suspect vehicle is described as a light-colored Mercedes Benz with a sunroof. Witnesses described the occupants of one of the dark sedans as a Black male. The driver of the Mercedes Benz was described as a Black female.

Detectives believe this murder was unprovoked and without cause. Gerardo was killed in the presence of close family members, some of whom were impressionable, little children. The family lives with the horrible and unforgettable image of Gerardo being shot and killed only a few seats away.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at the Homicide Bureau offices in Monterey Park, detectives announced a $10,000 reward, sponsored by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Second District, and approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The money reward is offered in exchange for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting death of the victim.
During the news conference, Miguel pleaded to the public to help find his brother’s killers, and said, “Everything you do in life has consequences soon or later.” He went on to beg for the killers to turn themselves in, “It is easier for you to turn yourself in and pay [as it is] now, than to make the process longer.”

At the time of his murder, Gerardo worked for an insurance company in Fullerton. In his spare time, Gerardo enjoyed filming and taking photographs of the sunset at local beaches. He was a very hard working and dedicated family man with a positive outlook on life. Gerardo was killed while in the course of assisting members of his community.
