Homicide Detectives Announce $20K Reward for Information in Shooting Death of 15-Year-Old in Unincorporated Charter Oak Community

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives announced a $20,000 reward Thursday, February 15, 2018, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting death of 15-year-old high school student, Karla Villa.

Karla was a fresh-faced, social sophomore and blossoming young lady when she lost her life. As a typical teenaged girl, she hung out with friends on Saturday night, January 6, 2018. The kids stood on a residential sidewalk in the 4500 block of North Heathdale Avenue, in an unincorporated area of Covina known as the Charter Oak community, and anticipated the momentary start of a social media event.

As the teens monitored their cellphones, a passing vehicle slowed near them and shots rang out. Karla was struck in the head, mortally wounded, and the vehicle left the scene southbound on North Heathdale Avenue.

Karla was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries the next afternoon.

Detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding Karla’s shooting death initially believed the gunfire came from within the passing vehicle, a black SUV. This information was updated by Detective Adan Torres at the press conference, who relayed evidence determined the shots were fired by someone on foot near Karla’s group.

To entice public interest, Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, First District, announced the $20,000 reward she sponsored, which was approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, offered in exchange for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting death of Karla Villa.

Karla’s mother, Guadalupe Villa, made an emotional and tearful plea during the press conference, as she clutched a stuffed animal which once belonged to her little girl. Through a Spanish interpreter Mrs. Villa relayed that she wanted the shooter to understand the tragedy and pain they brought to her and her family.

The Villas have three younger daughters and an adult son. “I don’t cry in front of them,” she said through a Spanish interpreter. “I have to be strong and not let them see me suffering.”
